Phonautograms (freebie)

Posted by: admin  /  Comments: 9

Its our pleasure to share a very special find with you all. The non-profit organization First Sounds has restored the earliest human audio recordings to a listenable state. Invented in the 1850s by French inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville, these "Phonautograms" actually predate Thomas Edisons earliest recordings by nearly two decades.

They were made by projecting sound into a cylindrical horn attached to a stylus, which in transferred the vibration into lines over the surface of soot-blackened rolls of paper. These captures were purely optical. No device existed which could translate the recorded acoustic information back into sound, until the First Sounds organization acquired the artifacts, with the help of the French Academy of Sciences. They worked with scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and other experts to devise a method of scanning and deciphering the images.

In the spirit of celebrating the past and present day sonic pioneers who brought this piece of history to us, we converted one of the sets into a playable instrument. We chose the D Major scale recording titled "Gamme de la Voix – Vocal Scale (May 17, 1860)", since it made for the most direct and flexible instrument.

You'll notice that the distorted fidelity, pitch and tone yields a smeared and crackling quality, sounding somehow between a frail and warbly voice and a washed out flute. We think it actually sounds beautiful and reminds us of the humble beginnings that modern audio-visual media has grown from. We'd like to thank David Giovannoni and everyone else who worked to restore and share this amazing little piece of history with us. If you happen to make any cool music with this little instrument, please do share it with the folks at First Sounds. They're very interested in hearing how people use these sounds in creative ways.

We've included Kontakt, EXS24 and SFZ formats, as well as a set of synthetic drum sounds made from the same source material. In the Kontakt version, the modwheel controls subtle vibrato and tremolo effects. The download is under 5MB and is absolutely free:

Welcome to the Tonehammer Mini.

Tonehammer "Mini" is the most comprehensive sample library ever done of ultra tiny object sounds. It contains over 5.000 samples of anything from buttons to rolling toys, wooden twigs to eating chips, boiling frying pans to human hoses, nail files to pocket watches, sand-drums to styro-foam, teeth clacks to water bubbles and so much more. The concept may seem strange at first, but these sounds have remarkable value in terms of composition and music.

This library is specially designed to provide a huge wealth of playable source material and inspiration for contemporary scoring, experimental, IDM, industrial and electronic music, as well as professional sound design. We captured an amazing array of different objects and soundsources in a wide range of environments, both exotic and mundane. Our goal was to not only further re-define what can qualify an instrument, but also just how playable we could possibly make each and every one of them. Mini is ready to go out of the box, yet deep and varied enough to provid limitless creative and production potential.

Mini is the opposite of epic, yet big in its own way.

Rust Vol. II (Epic Iron)

Rust is what happens when we walk away. Rust is abandonment. It is the ultimate fate of our overly-mechanized world. Rust is to iron as the seed is to the tree. It is what becomes of us all. In our previous episode, we took you into the world of metal-as-music, covering all sorts of little objects and impacts and a few bigger things along the way.  Maybe this time, we went a little deeper underground and just a little out of bounds. Maybe we bent a few laws while bending a little iron, or maybe it’s all good clean fun.  maybe we took really nice gear to places where nice gear should be taken. Maybe we went a few places that people don’t go anymore and then we made a hell of a lot of noise.

We used drumsticks and hammers, hands and feet. We bled a little and sweated a lot, maybe adding a little of our own rust to the mix. but in the end, we put everything back where we found it.  Back where nobody will probably ever bother to look again… And then, of course, we also went back home and really smashed the hell out of lots of cool junk in our recording booth and other more hospitable spaces.  As always we hope you enjoy.

Rust Vol. II covers +3.100 samples of "prepared metal/rust" instruments and is one of the largest- and most comprehensive sample collections ever done of metal objects . Rust II covers over 81 different type of "instruments" from giant aluminum poles to metal bathtubs, from slamming blast doors used as percussion instruments to massive Hercules (nuclear missile holders) metal racks, from creaking cell doors to metal objects without names, from massive metal stairs to slamming large tower rails. The library also includes a sick sample collection recorded at a sculpture park. The collection holds no less then 17 different metal sculptures each with their own tonal characteristics.

All instruments were tortured in traditional Tonehammer ways, which includes using fists, hands, hammers, mallets and a variety of other instruments of pain. In addition the library follows normal Tonehammer standards in terms of velocity layering and round robin.

Tonehammer Rust II specs:

Welcome to the Tonehammer Water Harp.

We decided to sample this instrument deeper and more creatively then ever done before in the history of sampling. The biggest current Waterharp libraries contains approximately 180-200 samples, which is less then 1/15 of the new Tonehammer library, Ours contains 2,903 samples and 59 different articulations, divided into two main categories: Bowed & Mallets.

The articulations include a variety of bows, a huge set of different mallets, metal devices, hands and other contraptions. The library also contains a variety of more experimental patches, including boiled water at four different temperature levels, hydrophone recordings (underwater microphones in the waterharp), magnets on waterharp and filling waterharp with metal screws and other goodies. This sample library pretty much covers just about every thinkable and unthinkable way you'd want to use/abuse a waterharp. We can proudly state we sampled the living soul out of the waterharp. All playable mallet programs contain between 5-10 velocity layers – and 6-10 round robin variations for maximum playability. In addition waterharp  contains a bonus set of waterharp ambiences, including a large collection of unique patches (Kontakt 3 only) made by Steven Tavaglione (Instrumentalist and Sound Designer; Wall-E, American Beauty, CSI, Supernatural and 100s other movies/shows/games).

Anti-Drum II is a follow-up to our popular Anti-Drum I, however we wanted to push the bar even further in terms of abstract percussion. This library is an ideal toolbox for all forms of experimental, industrial, electronic, IDM, glitch, sound design and even for providing fresh and inspiring new material for all types of scoring. The library contains 4.556 samples and 76 different instrument patches that each represent a unique texture. The library contains a variety of instruments recorded in our signature hall, including boom whackers, PVC pipe percussion ensemble to flower vases, glasses, rainsticks, soda bottles. We also included a supreme set of music box samples, which were recorded in several locations including large hall, studio and so forth. The library also contains a variety of even more unconventional instruments ranging from human beats through a cellphone (10 round robin and 10 velocity layers), stop watches and a compressive patch of what we call: "human trumpets".

Frendo demos by T. B. Folmann and G. Shadid

Welcome to the Tonehammer Frendo.

Frendo is a custom-built Tonehammer instrument. We created this monster by stringing bailing wire around and through through steel plates and bolts, over galvanize steel piping and across wood planks. It was meant to suffer. You can help it by mistreating it in horrible ways with screwdrivers, bows, drum sticks, mallets and fingers. The instrument holds a vast amount of otherworldly sounds, which is ideal for composers looking for new disturbing, horror-like textures for their scores. Frendo is partially a mallet instrument, recorded with wooden and rubber mallets, but is also a more traditional string instrument, since we recorded finger plucks and bows. It's the sound of Satan's cello, weeping softly for your burning soul.

Tonehammer Frendo Facts:

  • $49
  • Two microphone positions (heads – internal mics), (tail – external big hall mics)
  • Wooden mallets: "tuned", 3-4 velocity layers, 10x round-robin
  • Rubber mallets: "tuned", 5 velocity layers, 10x round-robin
  • Finger plucks: "tuned", 1-3 velocity layers, 6x round-robin
  • Bowed FX: bow scrapes, staccato notes, 1-3 velocity layers, 6x – 9x round-robin
  • Bowed high notes: stabs and sustains, 1-3 velocity layers, 4x round-robin

  • Bowed tremolo: effects and sustains, with fast, medium and slow variations
  • Screwdriver slides: long and short

Tonehammer Rust Vol. 1 is a hymn to man-made metal. The library contains 18 different metallic "instruments" ranging from huge sounding Stairwell Railings to a tiny Soda Can Ensemble, from Dumpster and Junkyard Percussion to an old coal mine air shaft, from Bowed saw to Monkey balls and much more. Tonehammer Rust Vol. 1 contains nearly 2700 samples, totaling over 1 GB. We hope you will join us on this boundless journey into the realm of heavy and not so heavy metals.

Tonehammer Rust Vol. 1 Facts:

  • $49
  • Instruments:
    • Black Diamond Mine Shaft – Bare handed pounding on the sides of a sand mine air shaft, outdoor.
    • Gigantic Bottles and Iron Chairs – metal and glass pounding on tile and glass surfaces in a large hall.
    • Brass Rail – Bare hands playing no a thin 4 foot long brass railing, muted and sustained in a dry room.
    • Saint Louis City Museum Caverns – Bare hands slapping on interior walls of giant steel tunnels
    • Coins – A whole lot of quarters in a small, bright hall.
    • Crowbar Strike – A standard 24” crowbar on concrete, close mic’d in a dry studio room.
    • Dolphin Point Bridge – Bare hands on the railing and support beams of a 100 foot long pedestrian bridge over a bayfront waterway.
    • Dumpster / Junkyard Orchestra – Hands, sticks, mallets and hammers against dumpsters and other junk.
    • Galvanized Nipples – galvanized steel pipes played against each other in a dry studio room.
    • Metal Racks – Large steel mesh equipment racks, played with drum sticks and wire, recorded in a semi-dry studio room.
    • Monkey Balls – Hematite egg thingies, banging together in a small, dry room.
    • Tuned Paint Can – An empty steel paint can, played bare handed in a small, dry studio room.
    • Bowed Saw – A standard saw played with a 4/4 scale violin bow in a small, bright hall.
    • Soda Can Tabs – Soda can tabs being plucked in a large, bright hall.
    • Stairwell Railing – Long steel handrails being struck with hard felt mallets in a dark basement stairwell, close-mic'd.
    • Tower Step Bang – Heavy work boots kicking a steel step in a 5 story glass tower, recorded from 40 feet up.
    • UMSL Observatory kinetic sculpture – Bare hands slapping on the steel sides of a gigantic outdoor wind sculpture
    • Willow Bridge – A long pedestrian bridge over a creak, played with bare hands, drumsticks and mallets.
  • Indoor, outdoor, hall and studio recordings. Please note that outdoor recordings are especially prone to human, animal and other random noise pollution finding it's way into samples. It's just a reality of sampling out in the real world, but we think little flaws in otherwise outstanding recordings can add a lot of natural character and flavor to mixes.
  • (4-8 velocities average / 6-10 repetitions pr. velocity average)
  • 18 instrument collections, 20 instrument patches, 2692 samples, 1.04 GB installed, 338 MB .rar download

Anti-Drum Vol. 1

The Tonehammer Anti-Drum contains 19 unconventional percussive instruments sampled in a variety of exotic locations totalling about 1GB and 2400 samples. It is a celebration of every day objects and sounds transforming into new- and interesting musical instruments. The Anti-Drum instruments ranges from workboot stomps to water bottle thwacks, clicking baby toys, wall balls, ukulele and guitar drums, to shock mount thunks and clapping ensembles. Many of instruments have been sampled in orchestral halls and large studio rooms, so they have a natural acoustic verb, which allows instant integration into scoring templates.

Tonehammer Anti-Drum Volume 1 facts:

  • $49
  • Instruments:
    • Antidrum Hall ensemble – the biggest and best of Antidrum's large hall percussion, right at your fingertips
    • Antidrum Room ensemble – the tightest and most playable of Antidrum's small hall percussion ensembles.
    • Alien Tube – This horrible little thing is a plastic tube with a sliding widget inside, recorded in a small bright hall.
    • Boot Stomps – heavy steel toed boots stomping on a hard tile floor, recorded in a large bright hall.
    • Clap Ensemble – 4 guys clapping in a small bright hall
    • Clap Solo – Close, dry hand and wrist claps and grabs programmed for fast, tight percussion parts.
    • Clicky Toy – Small plastic clicky, squeaky baby toy in a large bright hall.
    • Couch Ensemble – sticks striking leather couches in a small bright hall.
    • Djembe Ensemble – metal djembes played in a small bright hall. Includes side clicks, strikes and strikes with shouts.
    • Drum Circle – Djembes, mixed small percussion, didgeridoo and other stuff in a small bright hall, cut into loops at various tempos.
    • Guitardrum – Acoustic guitar played as a drum with bare hands in a large bright hall. Includes metal string slides and effects.
    • Handball Court Drums – Djembe strikes, clicks and hand claps, recorded inside a giant outdoor concrete cube. Springy and weird.
    • Hot Tub Knock – Underwater hot tub thumps, recorded using a stereo pair of hydrophones.
    • Nailgun – Pneumatic nail gun driving large nails into 1/2" plywood sheets. Recorded in an outdoor construction site.
    • Shockmount – A stereo pair of large diaphragm mics in special shock mounts being gently thumped. It actually sounds really cool.
    • Shouts – Male ensemble shouting in a small bright hall, with stabs and swells.
    • Sneaker Screeches – Converse All-Stars stomping and screeching on tile floor in a large, bright hall.
    • Ukedrum – Ukulele played backwards as a drum. Recorded close and dry, with 3 variably dampened articulations.
    • Wallball – A big red rubber ball being bounced and struck with a drumstick in a large bright hall.
    • Water Cooler Ensemble – Big plastic water-cooler bottles being whacked with drumsticks in unison, in a large bright hall.

    • Indoor, outdoor, hall and studio recordings. Please note that both outdoor field recordings and hall ensemble recordings are especially prone to human, animal and other random noise pollution finding it's way into samples. It's just a reality of sampling in the real world, but we think little flaws in otherwise outstanding recordings can add a lot of natural character and flavor to mixes. We aim to be more human than machine, though we are in fact made of cold, hard metal and wires. And also bubblegum.
    • An average of 6-8 velocities / with 8-10 repetitions pr. velocity)
    • 19 instrument collections, 26 patches, 2440 samples, 933 MB installed, 297 MB .rar download
    • Sample resolution: 44.1Khz/16Bit stereo wav format
    • Format(s): Kontakt and .wav

The Tonehammer Bamboo Stick Ensemble is a powerful display of how far you can take a simple musical ingredient like bamboo poles, which provides a powerful clack sounds when they are smashed together and … serves as great tuned based instrument when (mis)treated the right way. Our Bamboo Stick Ensemble was recorded using a variety of 6' long 2" diameter Chinese bamboo poles. We were blown by the power of these sticks, since they made sounds we have never remotely encountered before. The impacts are powerful and sharp. They compliment our Tom Ensembles perfectly. There is also a large collection of tonal sustains and effects, which were created by grinding the poles against wet and dry tile. Sometimes shrill, sometimes brassy and always freakin' creepy. Great for horror and dark, dramatic ethnic scoring. Pairs very well with our Frendo and Waterphone libraries. And it is always an excellent companion to our Epic Tom Ensemble and Epic Dhol libraries.
