Tonehammer is proud to present the mighty Kalimba. The Kalimba (Thumb Piano) is a tuned percussion instrument and a variant of the African Mbira. It's essentially a hollow wooden box with metal keys attached to it. The instrument is plucked with thumbs and the wooden box helps increase the resonance of the metal keys. However Tonehammer took it to the next level. We recorded the Kalimba in four different locations for ultimate user freedom. The user can choose between dry (close-mic'd in a small, dead room), wet (small hall), wetter (big hall / close mics) and wettest (big hall – far mics).

Finally (and this is true of all of your libraries), someone who UNDERSTANDS this instrument and doesn’t think of it as a “toy” to add “flavour” to new-agey material and pseudo-funk exercises. I have owned commercial kalimbas from Oscar Schmidt and quality traditional gourd kalimbas, which tend to sound a bit darker, have wider dynamic range, and more complex harmonic interaction. I am guessing that this library was sampled from a traditional kalimba and not a modern commercial one.

Great demos, especially the first one. I love that organic sounding wind instrument – is that the Blown Coke Bottle? Guess I need to practice playing Coke Bottles now… ;- Any word on when we will see these new libraries, and what’s next?
