The "Cylindrum" is a massive custom built tuned percussion instrument ranging over 4 octaves, so a percussionists dream come true. We spent over two years figuring out how to build and record the whole thing, since there is a rather complicated set of mathematics behind cutting and tuning all of the pipes to create each note. It operates using the principle of open and closed air column resonance. Overall, it sounds like some kind of strange organic synthesizer morphed into a broad array of tuned tom-toms.

Our Cylindrum library contains three separate variations of the instrument (light, dry and wet). The light version is made from a series of 1-inch Schedule 40 PVC water pipes that were played by tapping fingers over one end, with a microphone positioned at the opposite end. The dry version was made a series of 4-inch ABS corrugated plastic tubes with an open-ended rubber head played with a paddle. The wet version was a steries of 3-inch ABS corrugated plastic tubes with felt mallets on a a 3/8" thick rubber head, performed in our signature hall. It has more overtones and percussive feel than the dry and light versions – resulting in a sort of tuned tom-tom sound. The 1" light version was recorded in mono for a more focused sound, while the 4" dry and 3" wet versions were recorded in stereo.

It’s very similar to Blue Man Group’s percussion instruments.

Another ingenious instrument from Tonehammer. In this case, the PDF description and acoustic physics lesson is worth about half the price, alone. And then there’s a sampleset weighing in in the high 800s…

Couple their excellent sampling work and instrument-building with the amazingly flexible Kontakt 3 — the industry standard for very good reasons — and you have another instrument you’ll be pleased to own, even years from now.

For a company that popped up only late last fall, they are doing amazing work.

What does Cylindrum sound like? Well, just about anything you want. But in its initial state, just about every kind of tuned drum you could need. The low end of the wet version is a thuddy percussion didge, a cement truck hitting a watermelon stand, the upper end is demonic golf balls in a squash court. The light dry version ranges from fat bass guitar to pizzicato cello by a guy with big thumbs…you get the idea.

Every time I think I have it all,Tonehammer releases something I have never heard of.

Vocals in March too, maybe they should rename themselves to “Tongue and Groove”

Hope they release all the new as a bundle…

Tonehammer rules!

Tonehammer are evil. They release all these great recession-friendly products, except all of them are so good, they need to be acquired!

And now I see vocal stuff is coming too?? When will it end?!

Seriously though, congratulations on a new product. Is Tonehammer the best kept secret in the sampling world? I certainly think so.

Beyond awesome.
