Welcome to our upcoming Forgotten Voices: "Cait"

Singer Cait McWhir, originally hailing from Ireland, draws her inspiration from almost 20 years of exploration with indian, balkan, middle-eastern & celtic vocal styles. She has an incredible versatility allowing her to freely cross between conventional folklore to ancient Sanskrit chants, Vedic mantras to free improvisation in self made languages.

The library is constructed from over a thousand different vocal phrases covering over 15 hours of recording material. The phrases are divided into a variety of categories varying from some of the oldest songs known to man from the ancient Sanskrit chants to free improvisational phrases. The library has specific patches such as Balkan, Lullaby, Sanskrit Chants, Witch Chants and so forth. In addition some phrases in the library were recorded 2-3 times, which allows for a more broad type of vocal sound by layering the same phrase two or three times. We specifically used those in demo 3 and 4 (see below).

The library follows programming and editing techniques introduced in our Forgotten Voices: Francesca library. The programming allows user to sculpt- and morph phrases by adjusting the mod-wheel and pitch bender. The mod-wheel controls the sample starting point, so users can trigger off-set anywhere they want in the phrases. The pitch bender allows you to time-stretch/compress the phrase. Special key-switching also allows you to adjust to root pitch of all phrases in a patch by up to +/- 3 semitones. The combination between sample off-set control, root pitch control and time-stretch/compression allows users to seamlessly morph different phrases together, which brings endless possibilities for creating new phrases.

In addition Cait contains a bonus set of over 40 unique vocal ambiences made by Steven Tavaglione (Instrumentalist and Sound Designer; Wall-E, American Beauty, CSI, Supernatural and 100s other movies/shows/games). All the ambiences are made from Cait source material, so they seamlessly blend with her voice and are amazing for instant scoring. Most core vocal phrase and ambient instrument patches are also available in the EXS24 format, although time-stretching and sample offset features are not supported.

Note: All demos (see below) are played live using one vocal ambience and one set of vocals pr. demo, so they literally took 3-5 minutes to compose. So what you hear is what you get.

The pitch sculpting process in these libraries may take some getting used to, but it’s eminently useful. An especially nice way to do it is via the pitch controller on a Nord machine (since it’s totally free) or even better on a KAOS pad. I generally treat these virtual vocals exactly the same way I would treat a real vocalist… in terms of pitch that means Autotune (as well as other harmonizers). I actually like this way because it offers me the most flexibility, and I think saying that I treat these libraries as if they were the REAL THING says a lot about the quality and malleability.

Hm, I’m in a quandary. I want Tonehammer to be successful – at the same time, I would be happy to keep these as my “little secret” while everyone else plays with the big boys’ libraries and sounds the same. :-)

Anyhow, keep up the good work, guys!

What about “forgotten voices: Gregorian chants” :D
that would sell , cos its almost never done,
and alot of people need to go find and search illegal sampling for this.

that would be a premiere in the world

Thank you for the suggestin. Our vocal libraries each contains over 1000 different phrases – the combinaton between time-stretching, sample-off set and the fact its running from time-machine in Kontakt allows you to sculpt the phrases in many ways, including pitch. There are actually several options for you. You can either adjust the individual .wav file in the mapping section in Kontakt. All phrases are running in time-machine, so timing won’t be affected. You can change timing by using the modwheel. If this is still not working we would suggest you use melodyne or autotune tools for further phrase manipulation. Unfortunately Kontakt does not have phrase manipulation tools. It may take a little time to get used to these methods, but the end result is much better and realistic sounding compared to libraries using key-switching, which generally sound artificial due to miss level of expression, intonation, dynamics, legato and so forth. Hope these advices makes sense.

These ‘forgotten voices’ are truly amazing and inspiring. I just got Cait and I already have Francesca.

One gripe, though. I’m surprised and a bit disappointed that there seems to be no way of changing the pitch of the phrases.

I’d like to suggest that it would be a very worthwhile update to add, for example, keyswitches to allow pitching the phrases up/down a number of half tonesteps.

Please consider this!

Thanks and best regards,

Joachim
